Freshdesk is one of the most widely-used helpdesk platforms among SMBs, and for good reason. It has a mature ticketing system, a solid integration library, and a well-established reputation. But the product has struggled to keep pace with the AI era. Freshdesk's AI feature set — branded as Freddy AI — is a paid add-on starting at $29 per agent per month, on top of the base plan cost. WhatsApp is not included on entry-level plans and requires either a higher tier or the separate Freshdesk Messaging product. For teams looking for AI built into the platform from day one, Freshdesk is increasingly not the starting point.
Freshdesk's real AI cost
Freshdesk base plan: $15/agent/month. Freddy AI Copilot: $29/agent/month. Total for a 5-agent team with AI: $220/month. This does not include WhatsApp, which requires an additional add-on or product. Compare against alternatives where AI is included in the base price.
| Tool | Starting price | AI included | WhatsApp included | Free trial |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Freshdesk | $15/agent/mo | No — $29/agent add-on | No — add-on required | Yes (21 days) |
| Delyt | from $39/seat/mo (Starter) | Yes, included | Yes | Yes (30 days) |
| Intercom | $39/seat + $0.99/resolution | Yes (per fee) | Add-on | No |

| Zendesk | $55/agent/mo | Yes (Suite) | Suite Growth ($115) | Yes (14 days) |
| Help Scout | $22/user/mo | Limited AI assist | No | Yes (15 days) |
| Crisp | $25/mo | Limited | No | Free plan |
Where Freshdesk falls short in 2026
- AI is a paid add-on: Freddy AI Copilot costs $29/agent/month extra. For a 10-agent team, that is $290/month just for AI assist features — on top of the base plan.
- WhatsApp is not a native channel on base plans: to handle WhatsApp conversations, you need either the Freshdesk Messaging product (separate billing) or a higher plan tier.
- Per-agent AI add-on pricing penalises team growth: every new agent costs $29/month extra just for AI, on top of the base seat cost. Platforms like Delyt include AI in the per-seat price with no add-on.
- The UI feels dated: compared to newer platforms, Freshdesk's interface has not evolved significantly in the last few years. Agent experience is noticeably less polished than tools built in the last 2 to 3 years.
- Setup complexity: the full Freshworks stack (Freshdesk, Freshchat, Freshmarketer) requires significant configuration to connect. Teams often end up paying for multiple products to achieve what one integrated platform provides.
1. Delyt — AI included, WhatsApp included, per-seat pricing
Delyt is the direct contrast to Freshdesk's add-on model: AI agents, WhatsApp, live chat, email, and social channels are all included from $39/seat/mo (Starter, 3 seats included). There is no separate AI add-on and no per-resolution fees — plans scale to $69/seat/mo for 10 seats (Growth, $690/mo). The Agent Copilot drafts replies in real time as agents read messages; the AI assignment engine routes tickets automatically; and standalone AI agents resolve common queries without any human involvement. For a 3-agent team currently paying $132/month on Freshdesk with Freddy AI, Delyt Starter at $117/mo includes WhatsApp and AI agents at no extra cost.
2. Intercom — better AI, but expensive at scale
Intercom's AI is genuinely strong: Fin (their AI agent) has some of the highest resolution rates in the market, and the product design is polished. The trade-off is cost. At $39/seat plus $0.99 per AI resolution, total monthly costs for a team handling 3,000 tickets at a 40% AI resolution rate are $195 (seats for 5 agents) + $1,188 (resolution fees) = $1,383/month. That is more than 6x Freshdesk's base plan. Even on Delyt Growth at $690/mo for 10 seats, Intercom costs 2x more for half the seats. Intercom makes financial sense for well-funded teams with budgets to match. For teams moving away from Freshdesk because of cost, Intercom is not the answer.
3. Tidio — good AI for web chat, limited channels
Tidio's Lyro AI is a capable AI agent for web-based conversations. The entry price of $29/month is competitive, and the Shopify integration makes it a good fit for ecommerce brands. The limitation is that Tidio is fundamentally a chat-first tool: there is no WhatsApp support and no social DM integration. For teams moving away from Freshdesk specifically because they want better AI on email and WhatsApp, Tidio does not address those needs.
4. Zendesk — comprehensive AI, high cost
Zendesk Suite includes AI (Intelligent Triage and AI agents) from the Team plan at $55/agent/month. The platform is technically superior to Freshdesk in terms of AI capability, routing sophistication, and reporting depth. The cost per agent is higher than Freshdesk base pricing, but when you factor in that AI is included rather than a $29 add-on, the total cost is more comparable than the headline numbers suggest. For teams that need Zendesk's scale and integration depth, the AI is now built in. For teams primarily looking to cut costs, the per-agent pricing still scales against you.
5. Help Scout — simpler but no AI agents
Help Scout at $22/user/month offers AI-assisted features (summarise, draft, suggest) but does not have autonomous AI resolution agents. If your primary complaint about Freshdesk is the interface complexity and per-agent AI cost, Help Scout is a clean step sideways: simpler, better-designed, and similar pricing. But if you want AI to resolve tickets without human involvement — and reduce ticket volume rather than just assist agents — Help Scout does not deliver that yet.
6. Crisp — free plan for micro-teams, limited AI
Crisp offers a functional free plan for teams of 2 agents. The AI capabilities on the free and base paid plans are limited. For teams moving away from Freshdesk because of cost rather than capability, Crisp is a viable short-term alternative if ticket volume is low and AI automation is not a priority. For teams wanting better AI than Freshdesk offers, Crisp is a step down rather than up.
Who should stay on Freshdesk?
To be direct: Freshdesk is genuinely good for teams already integrated with other Freshworks products (Freshsales, Freshmarketer), teams that need Freshdesk's specific integration library, and teams whose primary channel is email with no WhatsApp or social requirements. If none of these apply and your main concern is AI quality and cost predictability, the alternatives above deliver better value.
Switch from Freshdesk without the transition hassle
Delyt imports your existing ticket history and gets teams live in days. AI included. WhatsApp included. From $39/seat/mo (Starter, 3 seats included).
